The aim of the project is the foundation of an open infrastructure for research in the field of characterization of materials and devices, through advanced techniques of tomography and microscopies.
The presence of a cluster of instruments that operates at the nanoscale is one of the basic requirements for a fast technology transfer in the field of nanotechnologies. ATOM project is presented by the Department of Basic and Applied Sciences for Engineering and it involves other internal structures of the University (Interdepartmental research center on nanotechnologies applied to engineering of Sapienza and the Department of Chemistry) and the Headquarter in Rome of CNR Institute of Nanotechnology, that carry out a leading research in the field of nanotechnologies in Italy and in particular in Lazio Region.
The network, that these Research Organisations want to establish to develop the infrastructure, will have as strategic partners some of the most important companies of the sector in Lazio Region, such as Leonardo Finmeccanica, ASSING, Rina-CSM, CRISEL and ZEISS.
ATOM project was born with the purpose to investigate in detail the 3D structure of materials, devices, components and biological tissues, from the mesoscopic to the nanoscopic dimension, through functional and dynamic nano-characterizations.
The planned investment provides users with innovative instrumental platforms with applications to bio-medical, micro and nano-electronic, cultural heritage and additive manufacturing sectors.
ATOM project is conceived as a connection between research and business, in virtuous synergy between public and private, to foster the research and, meanwhile, to develop the market linked to its technological applications.
Public sector, which will host the instruments and the staff to manage them, aims to have the leading equipment to increase the skills in nanotechnologies and its international competitiveness.
Private sector, which will guarantee the use of facilities and so the financial sustainability of ATOM project, needs to reposition itself towards productions and sectors of activity with greater added value and to access to advanced characterization tools, both to speed up production and to control the quality of the products.
National and international companies and regional research institutions can use ATOM services through an online booking platform, according to a specific Infrastructure Access Regulation.
